• The "How-tos" of Pharmacotherapy: Dr. W. Allen Rader will discuss the fundamentals of currently available anti-obesity medications.
• Using Generic Drugs in Treatment of Obesity: Dr. Frank Greenway will show how pharmacologic interventions for obesity treatment can be accomplished inexpensively. This presentation will discuss generic drug options, including drug combinations that have weight-loss properties. In addition, options for pharmacologic interventions in pediatric obesity will be discussed.
• Pharmacotherapy (Fall 2014): Dr. Ayaz Virji will discuss mechanisms of actions, indications, contra-indications, and side effects of currently approved anti-obesity agents. A variety of drug combinations that may be used for obesity treatment will also be reviewed.
• Mechanisms and Effectiveness of Obesity Medications: Dr. Daniel Bessesen will review the current guidelines for treatment of obesity, as well as describe the mechanisms of action, effectiveness, and side effects of currently available FDA approved anti-obesity medications. He will also review the factors to consider when tailoring weight-loss pharmacotherapy to the unique needs of each patient.
• Exercise with and without Metformin: Exercise is a potent stimulator of glucose uptake, independent of insulin, and it also improves insulin resistance in people with diabetes. Metformin is also used to treat insulin resistance. In this lecture, Dr. Barry Braun will provide information on the independent and combined effects of exercise and metformin on insulin resistance, blood glucose control, and risk for type 2 diabetes.
• The Long-term Use of Anorectic Medications: Dr. Timothy Garvey will discuss the role of anorectic medications in long-term treatment, existing evidence for their long-term safety, long-term disease improvement or remission, and prevention of disease relapse.
• How Anti-obesity Medications Help with Weight-loss Maintenance: Dr. Louis Aronne will explore and review the complex physiology of maintenance in weight loss, the role of medication in weight management, as well as the approved anti-obesity medications, including review mechanism(s) of action and the current evidence.
• New Anorectic Drugs in the Pipeline: Dr. Frank Greenway will familiarize learners with the current anorectic medications in late-stage obesity trials. Learn about the drugs and drug combinations currently in obesity research trials and become aware of future medications and therapeutic targets for obesity drugs.
• Obesity Medications: What Are the Current Options?: Dr. W. Scott Butsch will present a comprehensive review of the currently available anti-obesity medications that may be used as part of a patient's individualized treatment plan.
• Pharmacotherapy Panel Discussion (Spring 2016): Drs. W. Scott Butsch and Ethan Lazarus will come together to address attendee questions on using anti-obesity medications.

• Understand that combination therapies may target limited groups of patients effectively.
• Obtain awareness of the anorectic drugs (and combination options) in current obesity research and clinical trials.
• How-to manage sympathomimetic therapy.
• Prescribe anti-obesity medications for long-term treatment of obesity, understanding fully the evidence for efficacy, safety, and risks.
• Provide clinical scenarios where weight negative medications may be appropriately used in clinical practice.
• Discuss common medications used in the treatment of obesity.
• Discuss medication-associated weight gain.
• Discuss generic drug options that have weight-loss properties.
• Describe mechanisms of action, indications, contraindications, and dosing for such medications.
• Learn to identify medications that are iatrogenic for weight gain and select better alternatives.
• Use pharmacotherapy as part of post-bariatric surgery treatment.
