The purpose of this course is to present an overview of tracheostomies, anatomy and physiology of the respiratory tract, evaluation, and placement of “no-leak” speaking valves for communication and swallowing. Ventilators and interdisciplinary collaboration will also be discussed. (Introductory Level)

Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Describe the changes to the respiratory tract post-tracheostomy.
  2. Describe how No-Leak speaking valves work.
  3. Assess a tracheostomized patient for communication and swallowing.
  4. Identify the role of other team members.
