Medical Science with a Focus on Clinical Epidemiology and Evidence-based Medicine is organized by UGH Medical AB, Physicians' Institute for Professional Development in Healthcare / Lakarnas institut for professionell utveckling i sjukvarden (LIPUS) and will be held from Nov 17 - 18, 2025.

Description:
The course provides knowledge about evidence-based medicine, biostatistics, epidemiology and medical ethics that is required for doctors to use scientific evidence with a clinical focus in their work. This is according to the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare's interim goals (a5 and STa3 Medical Science) for ST doctors to:

“The specialist doctor shall

• demonstrate in-depth knowledge of medical scientific methods and ethical principles
• be able to critically review and evaluate medical scientific information
• demonstrate a medical scientific approach to routines and working methods in daily work"

Overall goals:
The overall goal of the course is that upon completion of the course, course participants will be able to critically review medical evidence that forms the basis for treatment decisions in the clinic by understanding how evidence is generated and interpreted. This will lead to them being able to make well-founded decisions in their clinical practice.

Results for the participant:
After the course, participants are expected to be able to:

• Describe different types of study designs and assess the possibilities and limitations of using evidence for treatment decisions for individual patients.
• describe sources of error, strengths and weaknesses with different study designs, study arrangements and data collection.
• describe basic concepts and terminology in biostatistics and be able to interpret study results based on them.
• understand and explain principles and terminology of research ethics.
