#7337 Introduction to Sign Language for Healthcare Professionals - 3 Part Series 2027 is organized by MotivationsCEU and will be held from July 14, 21, 28, 2027.

Description:
This is a fun, interactive workshop intended to help healthcare professionals be better able to communicate with their patients who use signs and also prepare them to introduce new signs to children. It covers 120+ single ASL signs, the manual alphabet, and numbers 1-20. Participants will learn and practice the signs and learn tips to help them effectively use signs in their practice. Participants will learn how sign language encourages speech and language development, enhances overall communication and can reduce frustration for children who are not yet able to effectively communicate using speech. The information presented is based in research and backed by the instructor’s 30 years of experience. (Introductory Level)

Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

Part 1:

  • Identify and demonstrate 40+ early signs
  • Demonstrate the letters of the manual alphabet and numbers 1-10
  • Explain the benefits of using sign language with children with speech and language delays and disorders
  • Describe how and when to begin signing with a child

Part 2:

  • Part Identify and demonstrate 80 single ASL signs (40 from webinar 1 + 40 from this webinar).
  • List specific ways to use signs in the classroom or therapy setting for elementary school-aged clients/patients.
  • Explain ways to use the Manual Alphabet for fingerspelling words as well as to reinforce spelling skills.

Part 3:

  • Identify and demonstrate 120 single ASL signs (40+ new signs plus signs introduced during webinars #1 and #2).
  • List 3 factors to consider when determining whether or not signing would be a good option for a client/patient as their AAC system.
  • Explain the difference between basic communication with Deaf patients vs. the need for a registered interpreter.
  • Summarize best practices when interacting with a Deaf patient and an interpreter.

FORMAT: This is a 9-course hour course equivalent to 9 CEUs or 0.9 CEU’s offered as a live webinar. Instructors present this course content via an internet website displaying real time power points. Learners will receive a PDF of the course materials before the event. Instructors lecture through a phone conference call connection or your computer if you have audio capability on your computer. Questions may be asked during the webinar using the chat feature or the “raise hand” feature for live discussion.
