OVERVIEW

#7407 Home Assessments for Healthy Living – Embracing Abilities and Disabilities is organized by Motivations CEU.

Description:
People are living longer without or with some level of disability. Research indicates that it is more cost-effective and conducive in terms of health benefits to age in place at home than to be in a nursing home. If aging in home is the best outcome as a person ages, then the home should be accessible for healthy aging in place whether there is a disability or not. Therapy practitioners are equipped as movement analysts to conduct assessments and make universal design recommendations that will prevent falls, promote fall recovery and establish the home as a therapeutic environment, particularly after rehabilitation to encourage exercise and physical activity for healthy living. This course provides the basic and necessary information to conduct a home assessment and make recommendations for aging gracefully and safely in the home. Course instruction method includes: lecture, videos, group discussion, lab practice, case studies, and question/answers.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Define universal design.
  2. Analyze unsafe and improper environmental home designs for activities of daily living that involve eating, dressing, sleeping, social engagement, and functional mobility activities such as sit to stand, walking and use of a wheelchair.
  3. Choose Implement the correct disability standard for home assessments that accommodates daily living activities from cases studies.
  4. Evaluate the client’s home based on a written, picture or video case scenario to justify universal design interventions.
  5. Integrate information learned that can be immediately applied to conduct a home assessment addressing social determinants of health.
