ABIM MOC Points
The fulfillment of this CME activity includes participation in the evaluation component. It will enable an attendee to earn up to 13 MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. 

Course Overview
This CME gathering will review new medications and therapies that are currently available, or will soon be available, and consider their comparative values. Trials are conducted using new drugs to treat chronic viral hepatitis B and C, non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, cholangiocarcinoma, primary biliary cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, hepatocellular carcinoma and complications of end-stage liver disease and the results obtained are thoroughly reviewed. Novel treatments in Chronic Liver Disease is a comprehensive yet brief program for renewing physicians on commonly encountered problems in the treatment of liver diseases.

Current treatments that have been announced for both Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) and Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) will be discussed by Dr. Kris Kowdley from the Swedish Liver Center in Seattle, WA. The session has also invited Dr. Constantine J. Karvellas, Assistant Professor, Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Alberta to act as our William S. Haubrich Memorial Lecturer on the topic of Acute Liver Failure. The session will also review alcoholic liver disease and NASH, which have now excelled in chronic hepatitis C as the advanced indications for liver transplantation in the United States. The first FDA-approved therapy for NASH is anticipated in 2020 and the data backing this FDA submission will be renewed as well as the latest abstracts from AASLD 2019 on NASH. The session has also invited a world prominent experts to share their views on the alcoholic liver disease of the topic this year to update knowledge of the attendees. This year the conference has incorporated a lecture on the topic of diet and exercise as control and prevention of obesity and fatty liver disease. It will also include a lecture on the diagnosis and management of benign lesions of the liver given by a specialist on this subject. And finally, a devoted lecture on the practice of systemic therapies for hepatocellular carcinoma as there are five approved drugs in the United States. 

Although, the treatments for hepatitis B haven't changed. The session will present more seasoned data available on long-term HBsAg loss and clinical outcomes. Incorporation of immune-mediated therapies for HBV with the purpose of curing the disease is also addressed in this year’s program. Innovative therapies for NAFLD and NASH are in development and significant new data will present a positive result in NASH. The first results of the phase 3 global treatment trial are also presented in the meeting.

The urgency of  NASH in the United States has bought up a significant need for effective drug therapy.  Numerous new systemic therapies for HCC that are approved in the last two years are also put forth in the gathering. The symposium also presents updates on the control of hepatic encephalopathy, hyponatremia, thrombocytopenia, and complications in the transplant candidate

Educational Objectives
By the end of the session, an attendee must be able to, 
• Identify the steps required to accomplish the eradication of chronic viral hepatitis by 2030.
• Review current knowledge of NAFLD and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and explore the use of new agents and approaches to the treatment of the conditions. 
• Integrate the algorithm for a therapeutic approach to the treatment of HBV using anti-virals. 
• Discuss the diagnosis, management, and treatment of unusual hepatitis virus infections. 
• Update the skills and management required for transplant hepatology. 
• Apply current options of therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma to determine the best approach for your patients. 
• Describe the diagnosis and treatment of PBC and PSC. 
• Integrate treatment options discussed for patients with ESLD due to alcohol who have complicating factors such as HCV, NASH or inherited genetic disorders. 
• Discuss the issues complicating drug treatment in decompensated cirrhosis, hepatic encephalopathy, and hyponatremia. 
• Update the diagnosis and management of benign masses in the liver.
• Discuss the rising burden of alcoholic liver disease in the United States.
• Discuss advances in the treatment of acute liver failure.
