Dr. Mitchell L. Shiffman, MD, is an experienced and highly respected hepatologist and gastroenterologist affiliated with Bon Secours Mercy Health in Virginia, where he serves as Director of the Liver Institute of Virginia with clinical offices in Richmond and Newport News. He is also a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia.
Dr. Shiffman earned his medical degree from the State University of New York Upstate Medical Center (Syracuse) in 1983. He completed his internal medicine residency and fellowship training in gastroenterology and hepatology at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals, now part of Virginia Commonwealth University. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.
From 1990 to 2009, Dr. Shiffman was Chief of Hepatology and Medical Director of the Liver Transplant Program at the VCU Medical Center in Richmond. Since 2010, he has led the Liver Institute of Virginia, where he focuses on the diagnosis and management of liver disease, including viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, and transplant-related care.
