In practice with Scripps Clinic since 1985, Paul J. Pockros, MD, is a fellowship-trained gastroenterologist and hepatologist. While Dr. Pockros treats the full spectrum of digestive diseases, his area of expertise is hepatology, including the treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C, as well as end-stage liver disease.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Pockros conducts research in the area of hepatology and is a principal investigator for a number of studies at Scripps. He has contributed over 300 published manuscripts and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals on topics such as chronic viral hepatitis, liver transplantation, complications of cirrhosis, diagnostic tests for liver disorders, and alcoholic, metabolic, and fatty liver diseases. He is recognized as an expert in the development of new therapies for chronic hepatitis C and regularly presents his research at conferences, universities, and medical societies, both nationally and abroad.

Dr. Pockros has held multiple leadership positions, including chief of staff at Scripps Green Hospital, director of clinical research for Scripps Translational Science Institute, and medical director of the Liver Transplantation Program at Scripps Clinic.

He has also been recognized for his contributions to the medical field, including receiving the Outstanding Teacher Award from Scripps Clinic, being named as a Skaggs Clinical Scholar with The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), and adjunct associate professor with the department of molecular and experimental medicine at TSRI. Dr. Pockros has also been named to several prestigious lists including Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare and the Guide to America’s Top Physicians.
