Mike is trained as a doctor in Newcastle and undertook surgical training in Sheffield and the Northern deanery. He has a doctorate from Sheffield University with other qualifications including a year of additional fellowship training on lower limb joint replacement in Auckland, New Zealand, and a further trauma fellowship. Mr. Reed has an interest in patient outcomes and is Head of Quality for the trauma and orthopedic service. Externally he is an advisor on quality to other NHS trusts and the health regulator, the Care Quality Commission.

He is an active researcher in the field of outcomes in trauma and orthopedics, with many international publications. He is an honorary senior lecturer at the Institute of Cellular Medicine, at the University of Newcastle. Mr. Reed is actively involved in education and has been program director for the regional trauma and Orthopaedic registrars since 2011. He is Chairman of the British Orthopaedic Association Education Committee.

He holds many national roles including membership on advisory groups for the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). He is the lead clinician for the National Logbook for Trauma and Orthopaedics, where 20,000 operations are logged each week. He is a Member of Council for the British Orthopaedic Association.
