OVERVIEW

#7305 Understanding the Gastro-Intestinal Disorders that Lead to Feeding Aversions in Pediatric Care is organized by MotivationsCEU.

Description:
Speech Language Therapists are highly skilled at sensory and/or behavioral approaches to feeding disorders. Often times, however, there is a gap in knowledge regarding common Gastro-Intestinal in pediatric medical conditions (gastroesophageal reflux, dyspepsia, gastroparesis, and constipation) that can contribute to oral aversion. Less common conditions, such as eosinophilic esophagitis, food allergies, food intolerances, and altered gut flora can significantly impact gut comfort. This course provided a basic understanding of Gastro-Intestinal Disorders and evidence based researched methods of treatment, including medications, formulas, dietary supplements, and probiotics. Case studies further illustrated how disorders were identified and treated. The participant came away with knowledge on how to better communicate with the child’s provider and multi-disciplinary team to ensure the greatest success in feeding therapy. Course instruction methods include lecture, demonstration, videos, case studies and question/answers. (Intermediate Level)

Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify the etiology of common gastrointestinal conditions that lead to feeding disorders.
  2. List medications used by feeding specialists to enhance gut comfort.
  3. Identify eosinophilic esophagitis and current treatment modalities.
  4. Identify ways to effectively communicate with patient’s primary provides, sub-specialists, and multi-disciplinary team members.
  5. Identify how to contact feeding experts locally and regionally to improve care to your patients.
