Description:
This is an introductory course on culturally competent practice when working with children and their families and caregivers. It provides a basic foundation of common terms and definitions related to cultural competence as well as practical ideas for creating more diverse and inclusive sessions. Attendees will receive resources for evaluating their current levels of cultural competence as it relates to interaction with patients, families/caregivers and other providers as well as ways to determine if the language, materials and activities used accurately reflect and respect the population being served and their significant others. Attendees will learn ways to become more familiar with the cultural, ethnic, and linguistic diversity of individual clients/patients and their families and caregivers and ways to further increase the diversity of their current practice Course instruction method includes: Lecture, Demonstration, PowerPoint Presentation, and Question/Answers.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Define 3 terms related to cultural and linguistic diversity. 
  2. List 3 items used to encourage play that are inclusive and represent diversity.
  3. Describe 2 ways cultural competence leads to increased social participation and play skill development in a diverse client population.
Credits

This is a 3-hour course equivalent to 3 CEU's or 0.3 CEUs offered as a live webinar or self-study.
