Description:
The SIPS (swallowing in pediatrics) course is designed to equip the feeding therapist with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills essential for evaluating and managing pediatric dysphagia effectively for patients birth to 18 years of age. Pediatric dysphagia is defined as any disruption to the swallowing sequence that results in a compromise and safety, efficiency, or adequacy of fluid and or nutritional intake (Dodrill & Gosa, 2015). Throughout our sessions, we will explore the anatomy and physiology of pediatric swallowing, discuss common etiologies and clinical manifestations of dysphagia in children, and review evidence-based assessment tools and therapeutic interventions. We will discuss crucial differences between feeding disorders versus swallowing problems. This class offers a crucial opportunity to enhance your expertise and contribute to improving the quality of life for young patients with swallowing difficulties. Course instruction methods include lecture, videos, case studies and question/answers.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

Describe how pediatric swallowing disorders are defined in the literature, what the contributing factors include, and how this relates to clinical practice.
Identify signs and symptoms of pharyngeal dysphagia or risk for pharyngeal dysphagia in a child and make appropriate recommendations for further assessment or treatment.
Analyze moderate and complex pediatric swallowing cases while identifying potential barriers to feeding progression.
Develop appropriate goals and treatment interventions (or plan or progression) to support improvements in pediatric feeding.

ACCREDITATION & CREDITS

Format: This is a 3 contact hour course equivalent to 3 CEU’s or 0.3 CEUs offered as a live webinar or self-study. Instructors present the live course content via an internet website displaying real time power points. Learners will
receive a course instruction link. Instructors lecture through livestreaming internet on your computer. Questions may be asked during the webinar using the chat feature or the “raise hand” feature for live discussion.

SLP Credit: This course is offered for 0.2 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate Level).
