OVERVIEW
Evidence-based patient care, quality improvement, safety, legal implications—these are all facets of discussions related to the bedside care and management of newborns of any gestational age. Critically evaluating current treatment strategies and the processes in place to implement them will help us to recognize when and where changes are needed.
The Joint Commission, American Board of Pediatrics Maintenance of Certification for Neonatologists, Magnet Recognition Program and National Quality Forum (NQF) are all emphasizing the importance of quality improvement projects in the NICU as a way to promote optimal care, safety and outcomes for neonates.
