Richard C. Prielipp was Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Minnesota Medical School from 2005 to 2013. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in medical microbiology and his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin. Following two years of general surgery training at the University of Minnesota, he completed an anesthesiology residency at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and a critical care fellowship at Stanford University Hospital, Stanford, California.

Dr. Prielipp was previously Professor of Cardiac Anesthesiology and Section Head of Critical Care Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Winston Salem, North Carolina (1987 – 2005). He is former editor and Chairman of the MCCKAP Committee, the Society of Critical Care Medicine's Multidisciplinary Critical Care Knowledge Assessment Program. He also completed nine years on the Editorial Board of Anesthesia & Analgesia and is a reviewer for several prestigious anesthesiology journals.

He is currently a Senior Associate Examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology, an active member of the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF) as a Board Director, member of the Executive Committee, and Chairman of the APSF Committee on Education and Training. He has won several teaching awards and is a past recipient of numerous research grants, including the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research and the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation. Dr. Prielipp also holds a Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Tennessee. His clinical interests are cardiac anesthesiology, cardiac transplantation, and perioperative patient safety.
