Dr. Hartwig graduated from the Duke University School of Medicine in 2001. He was a surgical intern and resident in General Surgery at Duke University Medical Center from July of 2001 to June of 2008 before matching to our Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Resident Program in 2008. He completed this residency program in June 2011 and was given a faculty appointment as Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery here at Duke on July 1, 2011. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Surgery in 2016 and was accepted for membership in the American Association of Thoracic Surgery (AATS) in 2017.

Dr. Hartwig is credentialed in robotic surgery and directs our robotic thoracic surgery program. He also supports one of the largest and most successful lung transplant programs in the country. He served as the Surgical Director of the Lung Transplant Program from 2015-2017, before taking a role on the Executive Committee for the Duke Transplant Center. He supports our training of residents and fellows with direct education, as well as directing our Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery Fellowship Program.
