Kathryn Ballenger Reid earned her BSN, MSN, and post-MSN Family Nurse Practitioner from the University of Virginia, and her Ph.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Reid has received awards for excellence in teaching, innovative teaching strategies, and professional service, and was a 2005 Fellow in the AACN Leadership in Academic Nursing Program.

With a passion for second-degree students, Dr. Reid led the transformation of UVA’s second-degree program into an innovative masters-entry Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) Program, served as a consultant for second-degree entry CNL programs across the country, and from 2007-13, was appointed to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) national CNL Steering Committee. The MSN-CNL program for which Dr. Reid led the development of continues to consistently rank among the top three in the nation. Dr. Reid’s past academic appointments include BSN Program Director, MSN-CNL Program Director, and MSN/DNP Assistant Program Director.

Dr. Reid has been active in faculty governance in the School of Nursing and was elected to represent Health Professions Schools to the General Faculty Council for two terms, serving as chair of the Policy Committee. Dr. Reid teaches across academic programs and provides expert mentorship to BSN, MSN, and DNP students. Dr. Reid serves on the state board of the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners (VCNP) and has also been re-appointed to represent the 5th district on the Commonwealth’s Council on Aging.
