Dr. Jonathan Hecht, MD, PhD, is an academic surgical pathologist focused on adult gynecologic and perinatal pathology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (Boston, MA, USA) and holds the rank of Professor at Harvard Medical School. His interest in placental and perinatal pathology began early in his career as the lead pathologist on the Extremely Low Gestational Age Newborns (ELGAN) study, which characterized second-trimester placental pathology and microbiology associated with impaired neurologic development. His first short course at USCAP was entitled: #62: The Fragmented Fetus. Since then, he has characterized trophoblast and vascular changes in preeclampsia, and most recently led a Society of Pediatric Pathology committee to develop the current grading system for placenta accreta spectrum. He is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Gynecologic Pathology and teaches placental-focused courses online and through the Society of Pediatric Pathology.
