Dr. Jean-Pierre Pelletier, MD, obtained his Medical Degree in 1974 at the University of Montreal and his specialization in 1979 from the University of Montreal and McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. After a fellowship in the United States, the University of Montreal's Department of Medicine appointed him Assistant Professor in 1981, Associate Professor in 1985, and Full Professor of Medicine in 1992. He is Director of the University of Montreal's Arthritis Centre and Head of the Division of Rheumatology at the University of Montreal Hospital Centre (Centre Hospitalier de l' Université de Montreal "CHUM") since 1997.

He was a founding member and later President (1996-1998) of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI). Doctor Jean-Pierre Pelletier was awarded the Canadian Rheumatology Association's Distinguished Investigator Award (2000) and the CHUM Foundation's Award for Leadership and Distinction in the Medical Field (2001). Together with Doctor Johanne Martel-Pelletier, he has won the International League of Associations of Rheumatology (ILAR) Prize (2001), the International Carol-Nachman Award for Rheumatology (1996), and the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) Award (1991).
