Denise A. Galloway PhD

Denise Galloway, PhD is the Associate Director of the Human Biology Division at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, WA, and a Member in the Human Biology and Public Health Sciences Division. She holds a Fred Hutch 40th Anniversary Endowed Chair. She is also a Research Professor in the Departments of Microbiology and Pathology at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She received her BS and PhD degrees at the City University of New York and did post-doctoral training on DNA tumor viruses at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Cold Spring Harbor, NY. She has had a longstanding interest in how viruses cause cancer. Since the early 1980’s she has studied the role of Galloway Lab (HPVs) in cervical and other anogenital cancers.
Her laboratory worked on mechanisms by which the viral oncoproteins function, the natural history of HPV infections and was among the first to develop virus-like particles that are the basis for the HPV vaccines. She is currently investigating the memory B cell response to vaccination and natural infection. Her lab also studies the role of a polyomavirus in the rare but deadly Merkel Cell Carcinoma. Her work has been highly interdisciplinary combining basic science with collaborations with epidemiologists, statisticians and clinicians. Dr Galloway has served on numerous editorial boards and grant review panels. She holds grants from NIH including a former MERIT award, and has been elected as a Fellow of the Infectious Disease Society, the Academy of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences.
