OVERVIEW
Wound Management Education Program (WMEP) Summer-Fall 2018 is organized by University of Washington Continuing Nursing Education (UWCNE) and will be held from Aug 08 - Sep 18, 2018.
Registered nurses who seek advanced knowledge and skills in the management of chronic and complex wounds and who function well as independent learners. This CME Conference has been approved for a maximum of 130 contact hours.

The UW School of Nursing is accredited as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. A provider is also approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #07218. Individuals who complete this program will earn 130 contact hours (77 in classroom/laboratory sessions, 5 in observational sessions, and 48 in preceptored clinical sessions). Clock hour equivalents are 108 total hours (64 in didactic/laboratory sessions, 4 in observation, and 40 in preceptored clinical sessions.)
University Quarter Credits:
The registrant will be enrolled in Nursing 540, Topics in Nursing, a fully accredited University of Washington graduate course. Students will earn 6 quarter credits. The separate application to the university is not required.
Course Description:
This program prepares nurses to provide expanded wound care services to clients receiving care for chronic and complex acute wounds in a variety of clinical settings. The program is based on a philosophy and commitment to “lifelong learning” and advancement of knowledge by meeting the educational needs of nurses throughout their careers as they provide services in existing and emerging healthcare systems. Core concepts that guide course content and practicum experiences include prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and re-evaluation of clinical outcomes in adult and older adult patients.
Mission:
To increase available educational opportunities in the specialty of wound management to practicing, baccalaureate-prepared nurses who seek to increase their knowledge and skills in this specialty area.
Goals:
• To provide a comprehensive, cutting-edge, evidence-based curriculum that strikes a balance between theoretical and practice components of wound education.
• To provide individual mentorship to 32 participants each year.
• To improve the quality of wound care services through the education of these practitioners.
Course Objectives:
• Relate impairments in wound healing to normal physiologic response to tissue injury.
• Apply assessment techniques to wounds in different stages of healing.
• Assess systemic factors (nutrition, perfusion, pathology) that influence healing outcomes.
• Select therapeutic options that correct systemic alterations and support healing using an evidence-based approach.
• Select appropriate topical therapies based on research findings and evaluation of the patient.
• Implement appropriate therapeutic strategies for complex wound healing problems.
• Demonstrate specific competencies in delivering wound care, including debridement, cultures, ABI measurement, compression wrapping and documentation.
• Individualize education for patients, family members and healthcare providers about prevention and treatment of wounds using adult learning principles.
• Explore opportunities for role development, collaborative practice and professional leadership in wound care.
• Discuss legal, ethical and cultural implications related to expanded practice in wound care.
