1.0 Introduction to ECMO:
This introduction course contains modules that will provide a basic understanding of historical events, terminology, key components of an ECMO system, primary types of ECMO, and basic blood product information to help set the foundation for your ECMO education journey.

2.0 ECMO Physiology:
This lesson series will lay the foundation for how ECMO Physiology differs from and/or supports normal physiology.
After completing this lesson, you will be able to:

Describe normal oxygen delivery
Describe how hemoglobin affects oxygen content
Name things that will increase oxygen consumption

3.0 Concepts of VV ECMO:
This lesson will provide the learner with a foundational understanding of V-V ECMO.
After completing this lesson, the learner will be able to:

Explain the role of blood flow on ECMO
Describe the indications of recirculation on VV ECMO
State the four factors of recirculation on VV ECMO
Describe the indications for patients to require extracorporeal life support
Indicate the specific severity of illness scores relevant to population
Delineate the absolute contraindications to placing a patient on ECMO
Discuss the relative contraindications that must be evaluated prior to ECMO

4.0 Concepts of VA ECMO:
This course provides information for the understanding of VA ECMO.

By the end of the course, the learner will be able to:

Describe the indications for putting a patient on VA ECMO
Explain the role of blood flow on ECMO
Identify key differences between the two modalities
Discuss potential complications for a patient on VA ECMO

5.0 Cannulation and Initiation:
This course discusses different types of ECMO cannula as well as cannulation sites. It also covers the roles of the different team members involved in cannulation.
After completing this course, the learner will be able to:

Delineate the team members involved in placing a patient on ECMO
Describe the priming of the ECMO circui
Explain the connection of the patient to the circuit and initiating blood flow process
Define the stabilization period for the ECMO patient
Discuss the potential complications that may occur during cannulation

6.0 Weaning and Trialing Off ECMO:
This course covers content related to weaning, trialing off, and decannulation for both VV and VA ECMO.
After completing this course, the learner will be able to:

Define weaning for Venoarterial and Venovenous ECMO
Describe the weaning process for cardiac and respiratory ECMO
Explain what the differences are for trialing off VA or VV ECMO
Detail the precautions taken during decannulation
Explain when to take a patient off who has not improved
Describe the support of the family in the event of an unsuccessful ECMO run

7.0 ECMO Specialists Skills:
This course will define and discuss the role of the ECMO Specialist.
After completing this course, the learner will be able to:

Describe the role of the ‘ECMO Specialist’ as advocate for the ECMO pump and circuit
Define a circuit check and what it entails
Describe the management of CO2 and Oxygenation on ECMO
Define the infusions that may be given to the ECMO circuit vs. the patient
State the importance of aseptic technique on ECMO and how to maintain
Detail the blood products commonly used with ECMO patients and how to deliver them
Explain the importance of maintaining skin integrity and list the interventions to use
Define the positioning techniques to use on ECMO patients
Describe the proper assessment of cannula sites, securing devices and dressing application
Outline the basic charting requirements for ECMO patient

8.0 ECMO Management:
This Course provides information on the day to day management of the ECMO patient.

9.0 Anticoagulation:
This Lesson Series will discuss how coagulation processes change with ECMO and how to manage anticoagulation on ECMO.
When the learner completes this course they will be able to:

Describe the blood surface interactions of the artificial surfaces of the ECMO circuit
Define heparin pharmacology
Outline the use of laboratory testing including activated clotting times (ACT's)
Explain the testing parameters for anticoagulation
Define the importance of Antithrombin III for anticoagulation with heparin
Understand the difference of direct thrombin inhibitors for anticoagulation

10.0 Complex Cases:
This course will address issues surrounding complex ECMO cases and emergencies.
After completing this course, the learner will be able to:

Explain what surgical interventions may be required on ECMO patients and how to prepare for them
Define the potential hemorrhagic complications that may occur on ECMO
Detail the interventions necessary for hemorrhage on ECMO
State the interventions for accidental decannulation on ECMO
Describe the interventions for accidental air entrainment on ECMO
Discuss how to safely orchestrate an intrahospital transport of an ECMO

11.0 ECMO Ethics:
This course will discuss some of the ethical considerations important when providing ECMO support to your patients.
After completing this course, the learner will be able to:
