OVERVIEW

This Continuing Medical Education (CME/CE) course offers an in-depth exploration of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) ultrasound for healthcare professionals, with a focus on evaluating thrombi in the deep venous system of the lower extremities. The course is designed to equip participants with essential knowledge and practical skills to confidently perform, interpret, and apply ultrasound findings in the clinical management of suspected DVT cases. DVT is a critical vascular condition that can lead to life-threatening complications like pulmonary embolism if not promptly diagnosed and managed. Through high-resolution imaging, this course enables physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners to understand venous anatomy, master transducer handling, and identify abnormalities associated with thrombus formation. Participants will also learn to differentiate between normal and pathological venous structures and recognize ultrasound signs indicative of DVT, such as vein non-compressibility, echogenic thrombus, and changes in blood flow. By the end of this 45-minute activity, participants will be well-prepared to apply ultrasound findings to improve patient outcomes, reduce diagnostic delays, and enhance vascular care in emergency, primary, and specialized healthcare settings.

Educational Objectives

  • Describe the normal anatomy of the lower extremity deep venous system.
  • Identify the appropriate transducer, handling, and ultrasound settings for optimal image acquisition.
  • Interpret ultrasound images of the venous system at various planes along the leg.

Who Should Do This Course

This course is ideal for Physicians, Nurses, Physician Assistants, and Nurse Practitioners specializing in or practicing in the fields of Family Medicine, Radiology, General Practice, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Primary Care, Family Practice, Vascular Surgery, and Cardiology. It is especially beneficial for those involved in diagnosing and managing vascular conditions and seeking to expand their point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) capabilities for lower extremity assessments.

Did You Know?

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) affects up to 900,000 people annually in the United States. (CDC, 2023)
  • Approximately 60,000 to 100,000 Americans die from DVT/PE (also called venous thromboembolism) each year. (CDC, 2023)
  • Ultrasound is the first-line imaging modality for diagnosing DVT due to its high sensitivity, non-invasiveness, and cost-effectiveness. (Journal of Vascular Surgery, 2020)
  • Compression ultrasonography has a sensitivity of 95% and specificity of 96% for proximal DVT detection. (Annals of Internal Medicine, 2018)
  • Timely diagnosis and management of DVT can prevent serious complications such as pulmonary embolism and post-thrombotic syndrome.
