Struggles with Urine Drug Screens is organized by College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP) and will be held from Jul 11, 2018 - Apr 24, 2021. This Course has been approved for a maximum of 1.0 Contact Hours.

Target Audience
This activity is designed for pharmacists and other health care professionals seeking information on urine drug screens, their interpretation, and cross reactivity of different substances.

Session Summary
Drug screenings plays a vital role in patient care and can help pharmacists aid in a diagnosis, document adherence and potentially identify diversion of a substance. Understanding how to interpret drug screens can be complex secondary to cross reactivity, drug metabolisms, patient characteristics and manipulation of drug screens. Research has shown that clinicians often lack appropriate training in interpreting drug screens, which could result in negative consequences for the patient. The session will focus on urine drug screens, how to interpret them, and cross reactivity of different substances. Other testing modalities besides urine testing will also be reviewed.

Learning Objectives
• Compare and contrast the different drug screening modalities.
• State substances that can be tested for in a urine drug screen and other testing modalities.
• Identify issues with false positive and negative results in drug screens.
• Interpret drug screen results and determine the possible limitations including the possibility of alteration of the sample and inability to test for all illicit substances.
• Redesign treatment plan based on drug screen results.
