Description:
Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) is a potentially serious complication following coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The incidence of CI-AKI is particularly high in patients with advanced chronic kidney disease (defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate <30 mL/min/1.73 m2).

Learning Objectives:
After reading this article the reader should be able to:
• Identify patients at high risk for developing contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) post–percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
• Compare the scientific evidence of procedural strategies and dedicated devices aimed at reducing the overall contrast volume administered and its consequences on kidney function.
• Implement an ultra-low-contrast-volume PCI protocol to reduce the incidence of CI-AKI.
