101 - Essentials of Metabolism and Theories of Aging

Description:
This Course is Organized into the following 3 sections and each section includes an exam.

  • Essentials of Nutrition and Metabolism in Health and Disease Part 1.
  • Essentials of Nutrition and Metabolism in Health and Disease Part 2
  • Theories of Aging.

1. Essentials of Nutrition and Metabolism in Health and Disease Part 1.
This course provides students with an in-depth look at key metabolic and physiological processes in the body impacted by specific macronutrients (carbohydrates, fiber, protein, fat), as well as macronutrient synthesis, absorption and utilization. Emphasis is placed on explaining how various nutrients are processes at the cellular level, which in turn can promote or discourage specific biochemical pathways linked to degenerative disease processes, such as diabetes, dementia, atherosclerosis, cancer and joint inflammatory diseases. Special emphasis is placed on energy production pathways in the body as well as the synthesis of key molecules, such as DNA and protein synthesis.The course also provides an overview of macronutrient synthesis in plants and animals, macronutrient ingestion, transport and their metabolic processing and utilization in the body.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will understand the synthesis of various macronutrients, energy production pathways and shifts in metabolism based on various factors, such as low blood sugar, fasting, insulin resistance, over ingestion of carbohydrates, cholesterol synthesis up-regulation etc.
  • Students will understand macronutrient physiological processing within the body of all macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein, fat, and fiber), along with their role in energy metabolism and influence of major health and disease pathways.
  • Students will have the clinical skills to begin counseling patients on key dietary strategies to improve key health parameters

2. Essentials of Nutrition and Metabolism in Health and Disease Part 2
This course involves a detailed look at the physiological role played by each vitamin, including their use as supplements in the prevention and management of various health conditions. The course highlights the role each vitamin plays in nutritional biochemistry, enabling students to understand why certain vitamin deficiency states result in specific symptoms. The course also explains the importance of vitamin therapy in overcoming specific types of enzyme polymorphism, which in some cases can be improved using therapeutic doses of specific vitamins, or using specific form of certain vitamins, to improve health outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will develop an in-depth understanding of the biochemical pathways where vitamins are required as coenzymes or cofactors, or play a unique role as antioxidants or in other health-modulating roles
  • Students will be able to identify early warning signs of specific vitamin deficiency or toxicity states
  • Students will be able to recommend specific doses of various micronutrients in the complementary management of various common and rare health disorders.

3. Theories of Aging
This course reviews the best-documented understanding of the aging process, including an investigation into telomeres, damage accumulation, neuro-endocrine clock adaptations, immune function, cross-linking of proteins, mitochondrial dysfunction, and other considerations. Embedded in this course are evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle strategies shown to modulate the aging process at the cellular and neuroendocrine level, with the purpose of understanding how to slow age-related changes and help maximize healthy life expectancy and longevity. As well a detailed look at some unique molecules, such as L-Carnitine, Glutathione, Choline, Melatonin and Hyaluronic acid is included in the program.

102 - Nutritional Medicine in Neurology

Description:
This course consists of three sections (each lesson has its own exam)

  • Nutritional Medicine and the Nervous System Part 1: Brain Development, ADHD and Neurodegenerative Disease (Alzheimer’s disease, Dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)
  • Nutritional Medicine and the Nervous System Part 2: Neuropathies, Concussion, Nervous System Toxicity, Autism
  • Nutritional Medicine and Mental Health Disorders

1. Nutritional Medicine and the Nervous System Part 1
This course reviews evidence-based dietary, supplementation and lifestyle factors shown to influence brain development (mother and child) and the prevention and complementary management of ADHD and common neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. This course also sheds light on the biology of brain aging along with proactive lifestyle strategies shown to slow brain aging, induce neuronal progenitor cell replication in the aging brain and help preserve and optimize mental capacities throughout the lifespan.

Learning Objectives:

  • Students will understand the role of key nutrients required for brain growth and development and will be able to counsel women on how to optimize nutrient intake for the benefit of their children’s and future unborn children.
  • Students will understand the pathophysiological processes and etiological factors in common neurodegenerative diseases and will be able to provide personalized dietary and lifestyle recommendations to help prevent or better manage these conditions.
  • Students will understand key biomarkers and risk factors for common neurodegenerative diseases and will be able to provide patients with personalized nutrition and lifestyle practices to help optimize these parameters.

2. Nutritional Medicine and the Nervous System Part 2
This course reviews the evidence-based use diet and supplementation in the management of neuropathies, and the complementary management of nervous system toxicity – primarily from heavy metals. A review of common neuropathies (i.e. diabetic neuropathy, genetic-based neuropathies, entrapment neuropathies etc.) is included in the discussion, along with specific dietary and supplement protocols shown to help reverse and stabilize these conditions and repair underlying neuronal mechanisms responsible for these pathologies, where applicable. This course also reviews the pathophysiological events that occur within the brain in concussion injuries, with respect to cell membrane damage, inflammation, disruption of neurotransmitters, energy dysregulation, mitochondrial effects and changes to nerve conduction. The course also reviews the human clinical intervention trials and the experimental studies showing the reparative effects of specific dietary factors and supplements in the adjunctive management of concussion and post-concussion syndrome. A final feature of the course introduces students to the leading researchers in the field of Autism and explains the principals behind their dietary and supplementation approach, as well as assessment tools and key biomarkers.

  • Students will understand the pathophysiological processes involved in various common neuropathies, concussion and nervous system toxicity from heavy metals.
  • Students will be able to personalize nutrition and supplementation recommendations to help reverse common neuropathies seen in clinical practice and improve outcomes for patients with concussions. Students will also understand how to advise patients on how to reduce risk of nervous system toxicity from heavy metals, and other sources, and enhance detoxification of heavy metals via natural, dietary, exercise, lifestyle and supplementation interventions
  • Students will understand and be able to identify major risk factors for impending neuropathies and will have an understanding of the nutritional medicine practices used in autism.

3. Nutritional Medicine and Mental Health Disorders
This course provides a review of neurotransmitter synthesis and function and basic underlying imbalances seen in common mental health disorders. The program explains key drug strategies used to treat mental health disorders along with evidence nutrition and natural medicine interventions that have been shown to help improve outcomes for patients with various mental disorders (especially depression, post-partum depression, and anxiety disorders). The physiological impact of these natural interventions is explained, as well as blood lab screening for important nutri-genomic biomarkers that can provide key insight into the selection of specific supplements or form of a supplement (i.e. methyl folate vs folic acid) that would be personalized to the individual’s need based on their genetic profile.

Learning Objectives:

  • The student will have an in-depth understanding of the biochemistry of neurotransmitter synthesis and function and the role of nutrition and supplementation in these processes and functions.
  • The student will be able to identify genetic defects (from blood work analysis) that would implicate the need for specific supplements to help improve the management of various mental health disorders.
  • The student will have the skills to identify which, if any, supplements would be appropriate to recommend in the complementary management of various mental health disorders, drawing from results of published human clinical studies.

103 - Nutritional Medicine In Metabolic Diseases

Description:
This course consists of the following four lessons:

  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Diabetes, Pre-diabetes and Blood Sugar Irregularities
  • Arthritis and Autoimmune Diseases
  • Osteoporosis

1. Cardiovascular Disease

This course highlights the documented risk factors for coronary disease and other forms of cardiovascular disease and provides attendees with the most current data on how to establish a client’s 10-year risk for heart attack. This medically-accepted assessment process enables the practitioner to assign each client to one of the following categories:

  • Very high risk
  • High risk
  • Medium risk
  • Low risk

Based upon the risk category, the practitioner can then set ideal goals for specific blood markers such as Total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, Triglycerides, Homocysteine, Glucose, Fructosamine, Creatinine, Albumin, INR etc., that are known to significantly reduce the client’s risk profile for a coronary event.

The practitioner of orthomolecular nutrition has many tools at their disposal to improve the patient’s overall risk profile through appropriate dietary, exercise and supplementation interventions, many of which are ignored, or taken lightly, by traditional medical practitioners. At the same time, orthomolecular practitioners must be aware of the common medications used to manage these risk factors to prevent placing the client at risk from the stand point of drug-nutrient interactions or nutrient-drug interactions (from inappropriate dietary recommendations).

This program will provides students with all relevant information addressing these issues and will explain the mechanism of action behind all dietary, exercise, supplement and medication practices pertaining to this subject matter. The assessment protocol outlined in this presentation should be applied to each new patient/client, regardless of their chief complaint, as coronary disease remains a leading cause of death in our society, with majority of risk factors modifiable via evidence-based natural interventions.

Learning Objectives:

  • The student will develop an in-depth understanding of the pathophysiological events that lead to atherosclerosis, both on a genetic level and dietary/lifestyle level.
  • The student will have the skills to conduct an evidence-based cardiovascular risk analysis on each patient under their care, with the capability of providing the patient/client and the patients’ medical physicians with a CVD risk factor analysis report.
  • The student will have the skill necessary to develop an evidence-based cardiovascular dietary and lifestyle plan to complement any medical intervention, which can help to improve multi-faceted aspects of cardiovascular risk (i.e. cholesterol, blood pressure, inflammation, etc.)

2. Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Blood Sugar Regulation
This course reviews the etiological factors associated with the development of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and blood sugar dysregulation. It also reviews key genetic markers for predisposition to these conditions as well as standard medical treatment. The course takes a deep-dive into evidence-based complementary interventions shown to improve the management of these conditions as well as to help reduce risk, and where possible, reverse diabetic complications, such as cataracts, macular degeneration, heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, chronic kidney disease and neuropathy.

Learning Objectives:

  • The student will have an in-depth understanding of the pathophysiology involved in type 1 and type 2 diabetes, along with common complications of theses disease that impact morbidity and mortality.
  • The student will have an understanding the medical management of these conditions as well as the human published studies showing the importance of diet, supplementation and exercise shown to improve diabetic outcomes.
  • The student will have the skills to provide diabetic patients with personalized recommendations regarding diet, supplementation and exercise, in the complementary management of diabetes and/or its complications (i.e. macular degeneration), or reverse risk factors for diabetes in pre-diabetic patients.

3. Arthritis and Autoimmune Diseases 
This course reviews the pathophysiological process involved in osteoarthritis and various autoimmune conditions affecting the joints. The program reviews common medical management along with evidence-based complementary nutrition and natural medicine interventions (and other lifestyle factors) shown to help stabilize joint cartilage, reduce the inflammatory process and cytokine release, and influence other factors shown to improve patient outcomes in these conditions.

Learning Objectives:

  • The student will develop an in-depth understanding of the biochemistry and signal transduction pathways involved in joint inflammation, cartilage erosion and immune function implicated in osteoarthritis and autoimmune conditions affecting the joints.
  • The student will be able to provide patients/clients with personalized dietary, natural medicine, exercise and other natural interventions to help improve outcomes for OA and other autoimmune conditions affecting joints, based on a comprehensive physical exam, review of imaging studies and blood lab analysis.
  • The student will have a high-level understanding of the medical management of these conditions, including the major side effects of drug therapy for which the patient should be monitored (i.e. liver damage, kidney damage, congestive heart failure, high blood pressure etc.)

4. Osteoporosis

This course reviews the incidence of osteoporosis, along with an understanding of the key etiological factors and pathophysiological processes involved in this condition. It reviews the key published research on the use diet, supplementation and exercise in the prevention of the common health condition. The course also explains the medical management of osteoporosis and the importance of concomitant nutrition, natural medicine and exercise management in cases of osteopenia and osteoporosis.

  • The student will develop an in-depth understanding of the genetic and lifestyle factors associated with osteoporosis risk.
  • The student will have an in-depth knowledge of all key human nutrition, supplementation and exercise studies that have been conducted regarding osteoporosis research.
  • The student will have the skills to provide patients/clients with personalized dietary and lifestyle recommendations, based on their bone density risk factors and analysis, to help optimize bone density over their lifetime, in concert with any concomitant medical bone density treatments that may be prescribed.

104 - Nutritional Medicine in Systemic Health Problems

1. Liver Pathologies
In clinical practice, patients often present with a condition or with co-morbidity issue involving the liver. This course reviews the etiology and pathophysiology involved in common disorders of the liver. The program also provides an in-depth discussion of evidence-based dietary and supplementation practices shown to help improve many of these conditions, as well as the dietary factors and supplements that can make these conditions worse, sometimes producing life-threatening consequences.

Learning Objectives:

  • The student will develop an in-depth understanding of the pathophysiological processes that occur in common conditions of the liver (and gallbladder).
  • The student will have an in-depth understanding of the human clinical studies, using various dietary and supplementation interventions, shown to improve various liver conditions
  • The student will have the skills to provide patients who present with various liver conditions with evidence-based, personalized dietary, supplementation and exercise protocols aimed at improving or stabilizing their condition, that work in conjunction with (and not antagonistic to) concurrent medical treatment.

3. Essentials of Pharmacology
This seminar educates healthcare professionals on the use of commonly prescribed medications and compares the action and efficacy of these drugs to specific nutritional supplements in regards to the mechanism of action, adverse side effects, clinical efficacy, and contra-indications. Many practitioners are aware that nutrition, exercise, and targeted supplementation interventions may, in some cases, reduce or eliminate a client’s requirement for certain medications, or act as complementary agents to enhance the management of the client outcomes. This program provides an evidence-based review of this subject comparing drugs and supplements that are effective agents in the management of common health conditions. DC’s and other health practitioners routinely ask clients about their present use of prescription and over-the-counter medications during the intake exam and thus, clients expect them to know how drugs influence the physiology of the

This course reviews the key blood and urine tests required to make an accurate assessment of objective health parameters of importance in the day-to-day nutrition and natural medicine management of a person’s health. The course explains the meaning of each lab test, how the body generates these molecules and the various genetic and environmental factors (including nutrition and drugs) that can affect their values in the blood, urine, and saliva. The course highlights ideal values associated with longevity, disease risk, and disease diagnosis, and provides a high-level overview of how to improve key blood values using evidence-based dietary, supplement, exercise and other natural interventions for certain disorders and biomarkers.

Description:

1A. Female Health Issues and Male Health Issues
This course focuses on female health issues, including the management of menopausal symptoms, premenstrual syndrome, fibrocystic breast disease, uterine fibroids and polycystic breast disease. The etiological factors of each of these conditions are explored, along with an explanation of standard medical treatment and the evidence-based use of nutrition, supplementation and other natural interventions shown to improve outcomes for women with these conditions. An additional section of this course deals with the proactive lifestyle factors that are associated with a reduction in breast cancer risk and the prevention of breast cancer recurrence and reduced risk of metastasis and mortality in breast cancer survivors.

  • The student will develop an in-depth understanding of the physiological and biochemical features associated with menopause, fibrocystic breast disease, PMS, polycystic ovarian disease and uterine fibroids.
  • The student will have the skills to provide patients with evidence-based natural interventions to help improve outcomes for the signs and symptoms related to these female health conditions

1B. Male Health Issues
This course examines the etiological factors associated with prostate enlargement (BPH), prostate cancer and male andropause. The program reviews the evidence-based literature showing the preventive and complementary management impact of diet, supplementation anthropometric measurements and supplements on the prevention and complementary management of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer. The signs and symptoms of male andropause are also explored and students are provided with proactive lifestyle strategies to counter these age-related changes, thus, improving quality of life for aging male patients.

Learning Objectives:

  • The student will develop an in-depth understanding, at the biochemical and neuroendocrine levels, of key age-related changes that lead to signs and symptoms of male andropause and affect the risk of prostate enlargement (BPH) and prostate cancer.
  • The student will have the skills to evaluate key anthropometric, blood and urine analysis findings and other key biomarkers, to establish the degree of andropause symptomatology and risk of prostate cancer development (or suspicion of its existence).

2. Sports Nutrition Part 1
This course review the evidence-based nutrition and supplementation practices that have been shown to enhance lean mass gains, explosive strength, endurance performance, and speed endurance (the ability to maintain maximum speed for optimal periods and/or perform repeated bouts of explosive activity as required for hockey, soccer, lacrosse, basketball, squash, tennis etc,). It also discusses how to best support the athlete’s immune system to minimize training time lost due to upper respiratory tract infections, which occur more frequently in athletes due to the demands of training. This seminar also reviews basic functional anatomy, neuromuscular physiology and principles of exercise training that is pertinent to the discussion of helping your clients become superior athletes in their chosen sport. The seminar will highlight aspects of ergogenic nutrition and supplementation practices that are safe and do not violate the regulations of the International Olympic Committee.

Ergogenic AidsIn Sports Nutrition Part 2 we examine the research pertaining to supplements known as “ergogenic aids” or performance-enhancing supplements. A review of the experimental and human clinical trials are presented to help the student understand the level of evidence for each ergogenic aid, as well as dosage and timing and application to various types of athletic endeavors.

1. Adjunctive Nutritional Management of Cancer and Cancer Prevention

This course highlights the peer-reviewed scientific studies, which illustrate the effect to which diet and targeted nutritional supplements impact important biological targets in the prevention and adjunctive nutritional management of cancer. Attendees will learn the mechanism of action through which certain dietary constituents and targeted supplements can favorably affect signal transduction pathways, activation or suppression of various cell membrane growth factor receptors, cytokine receptors, death receptors, apoptosis mechanisms, immune function, transcription factor synthesis and other biological targets of importance. This program provides practitioners with sound scientific support upon which to provide patients with clinically-relevant and practical nutrition and supplementation advice on cancer prevention, as well as a comprehensive approach to the adjunctive nutritional support of cancer, to help prevent recurrence and metastasis. Practitioners will also understand how certain nutritional interventions can enhance the efficacy of certain chemotherapy drugs, and/or reduce the side effects of conventional cancer therapies.   • The student will have the skills to design an evidence-based, personalized dietary and supplementation program for cancer patients that has the potential to enhance clinical outcomes and work synergistically with any concurrent medical cancer treatments.

2. Gastrointestinal Diseases

This course explains the evidence-based nutrition and natural medicine interventions shown to help improve outcomes for patients with Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Celiac disease and gluten sensitivities. It also explores common food allergies, food sensitivities, including types of testing available to diagnose these problems. The course also explains the management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Diverticulosis, simple constipation and reviews key health problems that produce abdominal signs of symptoms with respect to differential diagnosis.

  • The student will develop an in-depth understanding of the pathophysiology involved regarding the key intestinal tract conditions mentioned above.

3. Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine Assessment and Programs

Health practitioners recognize that nutrition, exercise and targeted nutritional supplements play an important role in optimizing health status, and are often used in conjunction with medical treatment in the management of many health conditions. This course outlines a comprehensive, systematic and clinically-relevant nutrition and lifestyle assessment, which enables practitioners to make personalized, evidence-based dietary, exercise and supplementation recommendations to their clients. Attendees learn how to quickly and efficiently gather all clinically-relevant data that are essential to a proper nutrition, lifestyle/healthy aging evaluation, which include the individual’s age, gender, dietary patterns, signs and symptoms of nutrient deficiencies, lifestyle factors that deplete specific nutrients, present or recurring health conditions, family history of degenerative health conditions, as well as other important lab findings and other health indicators.
