Obstructive Shock States: Recognition and Clinical Decision-Making is organized by American Association of Critical - Care Nurses (AACN) and will be held during Nov 15, 2017 - Dec 31, 2019.

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC's) Commission on Accreditation, ANCC Provider Number 0012 (60 min contact hour). AACN has been approved as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the California State Board of Nursing, California Provider number CEP01036 for 1.2 contact hours (50 min contact hour).
Activity Summary :
This session covers the key point-of-care assessment strategies used in ruling out the following emergencies as the reason for a change in a patient condition:
• pulmonary embolus
• myocardial rupture and cardiac tamponade
• tension pneumothorax
• aortic dissection and
• mechanical complications of the ventricular septal defect and papillary muscle rupture
These urgencies represent obstructive shock or surgical emergencies and require treatment beyond routine bedside interventions. Timely recognition provides the opportunity for potential lifesaving interventions. Assessment skills are key to the recognition of these conditions and include auscultation of heart and lung sounds, ECG warning signs, assessment of jugular venous distention and consideration of hemodynamic data. Patient risk factors and symptom presentation are also included in the critical thinking algorithms. Case presentations are integrated to reinforce clinical reasoning and decision making.
Objectives :
• Identify patient risk factors associated with obstructive shock.
• Identify bedside assessment practices used to help rule out specific forms of obstructive shock.
• Correlate the life-saving treatment strategies required for an obstructive shock to the critical need for rapid diagnosis and intervention.
