OVERVIEW

Motor weakness is a debilitating symptom shared across numerous neuromuscular and neurodegenerative conditions, often profoundly affecting patients’ independence and quality of life. This CME/CE course titled "Motor Weakness – We Can Make a Difference" offers an in-depth exploration of diagnostic advancements, therapeutic interventions, and supportive care approaches for patients with motor weakness, with a strong focus on cutting-edge innovations that are reshaping clinical practice.

Participants will begin by reviewing improvements in pediatric and adult care, including early diagnosis through advanced imaging, electromyography (EMG), and genetic testing. Emphasis is placed on recognizing early signs of neuromuscular disorders and initiating timely referrals for subspecialty evaluation.

A central focus of the course is Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a leading genetic cause of infant mortality, and the revolutionary progress in its management. Learners will examine the evolution of SMA treatment—from supportive therapies and ventilation management to the advent of disease-modifying drugs and gene replacement therapy, including onasemnogene abeparvovec (Zolgensma), nusinersen (Spinraza), and risdiplam (Evrysdi).

Participants will also explore advancements in adaptive equipment and assistive technologies that empower patients with motor deficits to achieve greater functional autonomy. Topics include powered mobility devices, robotic exoskeletons, augmentative communication tools, and customized orthotics. These innovations are discussed within the context of interdisciplinary rehabilitation strategies.
