Conference Description:
When a patient with complex chronic and acute medical needs is admitted to the hospital, an interprofessional team of highly trained professionals swings into action. This module highlights the distinctive and overlapping roles and actions of practitioners from nursing, dietary, respiratory therapy, clinical laboratory technology, occupational therapy, and physical therapy as they work together to care for Theo, an older adult who is suffering from adjustment to recent losses, as well as an acute burn injury with thermal airway injuries brought on by smoke inhalation.
Conference Objectives are :
The goal of this interprofessional continuing education module is to provide an overview of the roles and interactions among a nurse, dietitian, clinical lab technician, physical therapist, occupational therapist, and respiratory therapist as they address the complex needs of an older adult who has burn and thermal airway injuries. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
• Describe the distinct and interactive roles of nurses, physical therapists, dietitians, clinical laboratory technicians, and respiratory therapists who work in concert to address the post-acute needs of an older adult patient who has chronic and acute health needs
• Articulate typical assessment and intervention approaches used with a frail older adult who has burn injuries
• Explain how the roles and functions of an interprofessional healthcare team complement one another, requiring interprofessional communication and coordination of services
