Description:
Surgery can be daunting, and even when done by the best surgeons, can be traumatic on physical and mental/emotional levels. It is reassuring for patients to receive guidance on how they can proactively prepare for surgery and ways that they can optimize their healing from surgery.
Educational Purpose:
Participants will gain an understanding of integrative interventions that can provide surgical support across all stages of the perioperative period.

Course objectives:
• Assess patient frailty and its contributions to perioperative risk
• Define Perioperative Care and Integrative Perioperative Care
• Incorporate ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) principles, objectives, and pathways
• Identify key integrative strategies prior to surgery to optimize surgical outcomes
• Identify patient risk factors for surgery as well as integrative strategies to maximize patient resilience and reduce this risk
• Identify the contributory role of chronic inflammation in an increased risk of post-surgical complications
• Identify evidence-based strategies for optimizing surgical outcomes throughout the peri-operative period
• Discuss controversial issues regarding integrative co-management during perioperative care
