Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is one of the most common and costly conditions in clinical practice, yet its evaluation and management remain inconsistent and often ineffective. This CME/CE program aims to simplify CLBP management by presenting an evidence-based, clinically practical framework derived from multidisciplinary insights across neurology, anesthesiology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation(PM&R), orthopedics, pain medicine, chiropractic care, and Physical Therapy (PT). The activity focuses on the four primary diagnostic entities: myofascial pain, lumbar facet arthropathy, lumbar radiculopathy, and sacroiliitis, providing clinicians with clear guidance on characteristic exam findings, targeted diagnostic maneuvers, and corresponding treatment strategies.
Through a review of contemporary evidence and case-based discussion, faculty will address the limitations of physical examination, the pitfalls of imaging interpretation, and the appropriate use of medications such as NSAIDs, muscle relaxants, and neuropathic agents. The program also evaluates procedural interventions, including medial branch blocks, epidural steroid injections, and SI joint treatments, as well as non-pharmacologic modalities like PT, spinal manipulation, and acupuncture. Escalation strategies involving spinal cord stimulation, intrathecal pumps, and minimally invasive decompression will be contextualized for refractory cases. Additionally, the program will highlight best practices for recognizing and managing opioid-induced constipation (OIC), including early preventive counseling, bowel regimen initiation, lifestyle optimization, and evidence-based use of targeted therapies to mitigate gastrointestinal complications associated with long-term opioid therapy.
This education equips clinicians with practical, streamlined algorithms to improve diagnostic accuracy, optimize treatment selection, and enhance functional outcomes for patients with chronic low back pain.
