OVERVIEW

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and complex trauma-related conditions represent significant clinical challenges with profound neurobiological underpinnings. This CME/CE course offers an in-depth examination of the neurobiology of trauma and its implications for comprehensive, evidence-based treatment strategies.

Participants will begin by exploring the foundational neuroscience of trauma. This includes the dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, overactivation of the amygdala, and the reduced functioning of the prefrontal cortex, all of which contribute to hyperarousal, intrusive memories, and impaired emotional regulation in PTSD. Neuroplasticity and changes in hippocampal volume are also addressed to underscore how trauma disrupts memory processing and executive function.

The course then transitions to pharmacological management, offering a detailed review of psychotropic interventions targeting trauma-related symptoms such as hypervigilance, insomnia, and dissociation. Medications discussed include SSRIs, SNRIs, prazosin, atypical antipsychotics, and emerging agents like MDMA-assisted therapy and ketamine for complex PTSD. Mechanisms of action and clinical trial data are presented to guide safe and effective prescribing.

On the psychotherapy front, the course explores trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), somatic therapies, and internal family systems (IFS). These modalities are presented with emphasis on their neurobiological rationale and adaptability to individual trauma histories.

Participants will learn to synthesize pharmacological and psychotherapeutic strategies within a neurobiologically informed treatment plan, optimizing outcomes for individuals with PTSD. Cultural considerations, comorbid conditions (e.g., substance use, TBI), and developmental trauma are integrated throughout the course.

By the end of this training, clinicians will be equipped to apply neuroscience-informed frameworks to support holistic trauma recovery and improve long-term resilience and functional outcomes.

Educational Objectives

  • Define the neurobiological mechanisms underlying trauma and PTSD.
  • Identify psychopharmacological treatments for trauma-related symptoms and their mechanisms of action.
  • List advanced trauma-focused psychotherapy modalities including EMDR, TF-CBT, and somatic therapies.
  • Describe how to integrate neurobiological insights into individualized treatment planning for trauma patients.

Who Should Do This Course?

This course is ideal for:

  • Psychiatrists, psychologists, and mental health nurses managing PTSD and trauma-related disorders.
  • Primary Care Physicians and Internists addressing trauma symptoms in diverse populations.
  • Neurologists and Emergency Medicine providers encountering acute and chronic trauma cases.
  • Pediatricians and Family Medicine practitioners supporting developmental trauma cases.
  • Social Workers and Clinical Therapists integrating psychotherapeutic models in trauma recovery.
  • Surgeons and frontline healthcare workers responding to physical and psychological trauma in acute care settings.

Did You Know?

  • PTSD affects approximately 6% of the U.S. population, with higher rates among veterans and frontline workers. (NIMH, 2023)
  • EMDR therapy has been recommended by the WHO for treating PTSD since 2013. (World Health Organization)
  • Neuroimaging studies show decreased hippocampal volume in individuals with chronic PTSD. (Biological Psychiatry, 2021)
  • MDMA-assisted psychotherapy received a 'breakthrough therapy' designation by the FDA for PTSD treatment. (FDA, 2023)
  • Prazosin has been shown to reduce trauma-related nightmares and improve sleep in PTSD significantly. (JAMA Internal Medicine, 2022)
