The emergence of genomics and precision medicine is sure to bring about seismic changes in healthcare delivery. This course will discuss the current state of genomic medicine and provide you with a basic genetic overview for use in critical analysis. Using case studies, this intriguing session will critically examine the expanding field of genomic medicine (including pharmacogenomics and use of biomarkers) and demonstrate how its integration into clinical practice may help to more precisely evaluate, diagnose, manage and prevent selected acute and chronic medical conditions. As well as addressing concerns about genomic medicine such as should you use them, how to order them, what to tell your patients and ethical concerns you may face.

Learning Objectives:
As a result of this activity, you will be able to:

  • Identify the benefits of genomics medicine in developing treatment strategies for patients in primary care.
  • Utilize pharmacogenomic principles in prescribing appropriate medications for use for selected morbidities.
  • Discuss ethics concerns related to the use of genomics in medical care.
