Activity Overview:
Chronic idiopathic constipation is a common problem that affects an estimated 35 million Americans; it is associated with an increase in health care utilization and costs and a reduction in daily functional ability and quality of life. Many patients do not seek care from their primary care provider because of embarrassment or lack of awareness of available treatment options. A survey of US patients found that 47% were not satisfied with constipation relief therapy due to lack of efficacy or safety concerns. This activity will highlight how pharmacists should be aware of the safety and efficacy of available agents and emerging options for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation to make appropriate recommendations for self-treatment or referral to the patient’s primary health care provider.
Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:
• Examine the role of serotonin in the pathophysiology of chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC)
• Identify the existing and emerging prescription therapies for CIC management
• Explore the role of the pharmacist in educating and counseling patients about CIC and the impact that clinical intervention can have on patient outcomes
