Target Audience:
Physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners, nursing home administrators, home health providers, allied health providers, social workers, and other health care professionals who work with persons with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Needs Statement:
Many healthcare providers do not conceptualize degenerative dementia as a fatal, uncurable condition and do not take appropriate steps to ensure adequate end-of-life care. Current hospice mentality focuses on physical impairment related to systemic organ system failure. Ideally, end-of-life care should be prepared for and initiated with end-stage brain failure irrespective of the health of systemic organ systems.

Conference Objectives :
Upon completion of the educational activity, you will be able to:
• Describe the progression of signs and symptoms in end-stage dementia.
• Identify the different uses of pharmacological therapies to alleviate symptoms and ensure comfort in the end-stage of disease.
• Create an environment conducive to comfort care for persons in the end-stage of dementia.
• Discuss different types of spiritual expression and how to use them to provide end-of-life spiritual care and support to people with end-stage dementia.
