In this presentation, we will review the prevalence and unique pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome, and discuss the defining characteristics of IBS, including the subtypes per ROME IV criteria. Through case based discussion, we will discuss the process of diagnosing a patient with IBS, and review the various management options for treatment including both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions.
Learning Objectives:
After taking part in this educational activity, participants should be better able to:
- Identify the differential diagnoses as well as the diagnostic and clinical criteria of IBS
- Develop a basic understanding of the unique pathophysiology of IBS-
- Review both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for the management of IBS
