Course Description:
Elder abuse is a harsh reality and this course teaches healthcare workers how to identify its victims and how to respond. Those who complete this CE will be able to explain the signs and symptoms of elderly abuse, as well is the phenomenon of abuse within institutional settings. They will also learn about how to report elder abuse and getting proper assistance.

OT/As and PT/As will benefit from this course through improved awareness of types of elder abuse, laws and procedures related to elder abuse, knowledge of warning signs and consequences of abuse. Clinicians will gain improved observation skills regarding behavioral indicators of victims of physical, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse needed to identify and report to appropriate agencies, and an improved awareness of a clinician's role in reporting abuse.

Objectives:
After completing this course, the learner will be able to:
• Describe the elderly population.
• Identify four forms of abuse that occur in the elderly population.
• Identify three factors that contribute to elder abuse by caregivers.
• Describe five factors contributing to institutional abuse of elders.
• Recognize resources for reporting elder abuse and obtaining assistance.
• Describe the healthcare professionals’ role in identification and prevention of elder abuse.
• When given a case scenario, the participant will be able to apply the knowledge gained from this course to select the correct form of elder abuse being presented.
• Given a case scenario, formulate a plan using resources discussed to assist your patient in receiving help for suspected elder abuse.
