OVERVIEW

#7417 Geriatric Balance Examination & Interventions is organized by MotivationsCEU.

Description:
The purpose of this course is to enable clinicians to select and administer appropriate balance and fall examination and interventions for the aging adult. Physical therapists will be instructed how to perform reliable and valid functional outcomes measures for elders to identify mobility and balance impairments and to determine their risk of falls. A review of the evidence for the effectiveness of selected interventions to promote balance and reduce falls risk will be discussed. Clinicians will be able to design effective, evidence-based plans of care for elders with balance and mobility challenges.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify the physiological components of balance and the effect of aging on balance function.
  2. Describe balance strategies used to correct deviation of the center of gravity from the base of support, and how these strategies change with aging.
  3. Perform current, evidence-based balance tests to determine falls risk in elderly persons.
  4. Implement exercise and functional activity interventions to reduce the risk of falls in the elderly during household mobility and ADLs.
  5. Analyze the research on balance examinations and interventions for reducing falls in the elderly.
