Activity Overview:
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common immune-mediated demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. Although MS has long been considered a disease that affects predominately individuals of northern European descent, recent data suggest the incidence of MS in the United States is highest in African Americans. In addition, the clinical presentation of MS is variable among African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Asian Americans, with earlier, more aggressive disease leading to greater disability. And although these populations require treatment that aligns with their unique disease presentations, they are substantially underrepresented in clinical trials. Women of childbearing age and children with MS also represent special populations who require unique treatment considerations.

During this Clinical Interchange™, expert faculty will discuss genetic, cultural, and clinical considerations for management of MS in African American, Hispanic American, and Asian American individuals. The panelists will identify barriers that are limiting enrollment in clinical trials as well as strategies and resources to increase awareness and participation. They will also review clinical evidence for treatment of MS in multiethnic populations, pediatric patients, and women interested in family planning.

• Discuss strategies for overcoming ethnic/cultural barriers to care in patients with MS
