Description:
The purpose of this course is to provide a knowledge base on the diagnosis of dysphagia and speech deficits and treatment strategies including use of tracheoesophageal prosthesis (TEP) for individuals diagnosed with head and neck cancers. Characteristics and functional impact of head and neck lymphedema on speech, swallowing and quality of life will be reviewed. The importance of a multi-disciplinary team approach in the treatment of head and neck cancer will also be discussed. (Introductory Level)

Objectives:
Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Identify the various causes and characteristics of head and neck cancer
  • Describe various treatment options for head and neck cancer; including surgery, chemo, and radiation
  • Describe the effects of various head and neck cancers on speech and swallowing function
  • Identify the effects of cancer treatment on speech and swallowing
  • Describe methods for evaluating speech and swallowing deficits in those with head and neck cancer
  • Identify the treatment options for speech; including alaryngeal speech
  • Describe tracheoesophageal puncture/prosthesis
  • Identify therapeutic options for dysphagia related to head and neck cancers
Credits

FORMAT: This is a 3-hour course equivalent to 0.3 CEUs offered as a Self-Study. Instructors present this course content via an internet website displaying real time power points. Learners will receive a PDF of the course materials before the event. Instructors lecture through a phone conference call connection or your computer if you have audio capability on your computer. Questions may be asked during the webinar using the chat feature or the “raise hand” feature for live discussion.
