Description:
This course reviews many of the major concepts in nursing care when women are diagnosed with malignancies. The major cancers that affect women are addressed, including breast, ovarian, uterine, cervical, lung, colorectal, and skin cancers. Information about each of these cancers includes an overview of the epidemiology of cancer, risk factors, risk assessment, prevention and detection strategies, diagnosis, staging, and treatment modalities. Chapters that address genetic risk, psychosocial concerns, sexuality, alternative and complementary medicine, and patient education considerations are also included. Case studies and commentaries are included throughout the course to illustrate content and to assist with concepts and knowledge acquisition for application in practice settings.

This course provides registered nurses and advanced practice nurses with evidence-based information to inform their practice when caring for women diagnosed with cancer. Its comprehensive content serves as a foundation for competent and state-of-the-art nursing practice.

Course Objectives:
• Describe cancer and cancer risk in women including trends, the impact of family history, and the genetic testing process.
• Discuss the epidemiology, risk factors, prevention and detection strategies, common staging schemas, and treatment options for breast cancer.
• Discuss the epidemiology, risk factors, prevention and detection strategies, common staging schemas, and treatment options for endometrial cancer.
• Discuss the epidemiology, risk factors, prevention and detection strategies, common staging schemas, and treatment options for ovarian cancer.
• Discuss the epidemiology, risk factors, prevention and detection strategies, common staging schemas, and treatment options for cervical cancer.
• Discuss the epidemiology, risk factors, prevention and detection strategies, and treatment options for lung cancer in women.
• Discuss the epidemiology, risk factors, prevention and detection strategies, and treatment options form colorectal cancer in women.
• Discuss the epidemiology, risk factors, prevention and detection strategies, and treatment options for skin cancer in women.
• Discuss the psychosocial issues that may accompany a diagnosis of cancer, including the nurse’s role in and interventions for these issues.
• Discuss psychologic, functional, and fertility issues associated with sexual activity and sexuality in women with cancer including interventions to address these issues.
• Discuss complementary and alternative medicine options available.
• Discuss ways for the nurse and interdisciplinary team to assist patients in evaluating and accessing credible educational resources.
