Course Description:
In the role of addiction counseling, the theoretical approach is important to adopt. There are many different theories; however, no one single theory or therapy is considered appropriate for all clients. An addiction counselor may use their own experiences, coupled with their training and supervision, in developing a style based on a specific theory that feels the most comfortable. Additionally, an addiction professional may be adept at several approaches. While one approach may be the foundation of one’s professional development, the clinical skill to adjust approaches for the best needs of the individual client is seen as congruent with an experienced practitioner.

The purpose of this independent study is to provide an overview of the theories and related therapies most commonly used in substance use disorder treatment. The competent addiction professional uses a method of counseling that is founded in evidence-based practices and best practice approaches, and considered most appropriate for treatment of those persons in substance use disorder treatment. Having a strong theoretical base, the addiction counselor can offer treatment that is individualized to the needs of each client.

Objectives:
Participants will
• Learn a general definition of each theory
• Describe the historical context of the theory, including the creator / author.
• List 2 main principles to each theory.
• Explain the application of the theory to addiction counseling
