Chronic Kidney Disease - Managing Medication and Diet Together

This CE course for Registered Nurses (RNs) explores a comprehensive approach to managing Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) by integrating both medication and dietary strategies. Nurses will gain an in-depth understanding of CKD pathophysiology, diagnostic tools, treatment options, and renal replacement therapies. The course emphasizes evidence-based care strategies to manage complications such as anemia, metabolic bone disease, and electrolyte imbalances. Participants will be equipped to support patients in navigating complex treatment plans, improve adherence to therapy, and provide holistic education for better disease management and enhanced quality of life. The curriculum also includes practical guidance on fluid management, potassium and phosphorus control, and the role of dietitians in care planning. By combining pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic approaches, RNs will be prepared to deliver patient-centered, safe, and effective care throughout the CKD disease spectrum, from early stages to dialysis and transplantation.

Educational Objectives

• Understand the pathophysiology, progression, and complications of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD), including key risk factors and the impact of comorbidities such as diabetes and hypertension.
• Analyze diagnostic tools, screening methods, and clinical markers for early CKD progression detection and monitoring, including GFR estimation, proteinuria assessment, and imaging studies.
• Evaluate nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment strategies for CKD management, focusing on controlling blood pressure, reducing proteinuria, managing electrolyte imbalances, and preventing complications such as anemia, metabolic bone disease, and cardiovascular events.
• Compare renal replacement therapy options, including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplantation, outlining their principles, indications, advantages, disadvantages, and associated complications.
• Develop a comprehensive approach to managing complications associated with dialysis, such as hypotension, infections, thrombosis, and vitamin depletion, emphasizing preventive measures, treatment strategies, and monitoring outcomes.
