Description:
Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities are securing housing, and service coordinators and other housing professionals are not always equipped to best support these persons. As service providers, increased knowledge of this population is necessary to ensure that they are successful and safe within their homes, supporting good outcomes towards their quality of life. This presentation will allow participants to gain a deeper understanding of the cognitive limitations an individual with an intellectual/developmental disability might have—including why they may exhibit certain behaviors, how it affects them when completing annuals, taking care of day-to-day tasks and communicating their needs— and the vulnerability risks that this population might face while living in housing.

• Identify challenges that a person with an ID/DD might face and how to assist them with those challenges
• Recognize how community integration involves public housing
• Identify effective techniques/approaches to support those with an ID/DD
