Eating Disorders in Boys and Men: Improving Recognition and Reducing Stigma is organized by Healthcare (HC) - UK Conferences Ltd and will be held on Jan 27, 2027.
Description:
England’s first Men’s Health Strategy calls for a stronger focus on prevention, earlier intervention and health services that are designed around the needs of men and boys. The strategy recognises that men are not a single homogenous group and that services need to understand the different barriers, experiences and inequalities affecting their health and engagement with care.
Eating disorders can affect anyone, regardless of their sex, gender, age, weight or background. However, stereotypes that eating disorders predominantly affect young women can mean that difficulties among boys and men are overlooked, misunderstood or identified only when they have become severe.
Men may also experience or describe eating distress differently. Muscularity ideals, compulsive exercise, restrictive diets, gym and fitness culture, the use of supplements and weight-loss medication, and concerns about strength, leanness or physical performance may obscure an underlying eating disorder.
This conference will enable you to:
- Network with colleagues who are working to improve services, practice and treatment to reduce eating disorders in underrepresented groups
- Discuss the national data and evidence base currently on eating disorders in men, and use this to direct and target services where access to care is hindered
- Reflect on the lived experience of men with eating disorders and why men are underrepresented in eating disorder services
- Understand the impact of traditional masculinity norms on mental health
- Understand how societal biases play a role in eating disorders among men
- Improve how the health care system approaches eating disorders in men
- Reflect on the impact of weight loss medications on eating disorders
- Understand why different eating disorders appear at different rates among different backgrounds
- Reflect on insights from service providers and the unique challenges in addressing eating disorders among men and boys
