2nd International Conference on Physical Therapy in Oncology (ICPTO) is organized by Danish Society for Oncological and Palliative Physiotherapy / Dansk Selskab for Onkologisk og Palliativ Fysioterapi (DOPF), Dutch Institute of Allied Health Care (NPi), The Association of Danish Physiotherapists (DFys), Danish Society for Physiotherapeutic Lymphedema Treatment / Dansk Selskab for Fysioterapeutisk Lymfodembehandling (DSFL) and will be held from May 03 - 04, 2021.

Description:
Physical therapists play a pivotal role in helping patients cope with long-term and side effects of cancer and cancer treatment such as fatigue, deconditioning, musculoskeletal impairments and lymphedema. Physical therapy in oncology has made marked steps forward in the past two decades. With this conference, we aim to bring together physical therapists from around the globe, to share knowledge, exchange best practice, and update knowledge based on recent scientific developments.
The overall theme for the meeting is ‘When Research meets Clinical Practice’. Denmark, where the conference is organized from, has a reputation for implementing research into daily practice. Studies like ‘Body and Cancer’ – a multimodal exercise intervention for patients with mixed cancer diagnosis undergoing chemotherapy – is for example offered to all eligible patients throughout the country. Also ‘FC Prostate’ – men with prostate cancer playing soccer – has been implemented in eight soccer clubs around the country and ‘EXHALE’ – exercise for patients with advanced lung cancer undergoing chemotherapy – is offered in the region of Copenhagen. Furthermore, as all patients with cancer by law are entitled to receive rehabilitation, all municipalities in Denmark offer cancer rehabilitation. As such this meeting will be a great venue to network with physical therapists from all over the world that provide cancer rehabilitation every day.
The meeting will contain plenary sessions regarding the role of physical therapy in oncology, and workshops focusing on the management of musculoskeletal sequelae to cancer treatment, exercise interventions aimed at reducing side- and long-term effects, and aspects of exercise physiology in cancer. The speakers are internationally recognized researchers, clinical experts or professional leaders. In addition, poster presentations and thematic poster presentations will enable you to highlight your own research.

The four main themes of the 2nd ICPTO are:
Frailty, muscle function and muscle structure:
Physical exercise has the potential to help maintain or slow down the loss of physical function, as well as to sustain and build muscle mass.
This session will give an overview of the literature – the rationale for resistance training – and clinical examples of resistance training for patients with cancer.
Lymphedema:
Secondary lymphedema is a prevalent consequence of cancer treatment, and is associated with considerable morbidity in affected individuals.
On this conference you will be provided with new knowledge regarding inflammation, manual lymph drainage, and physical exercises for patients with lymphedema of the lower extremities.
Palliative care:
On the conference we will address some of the challenging issues health care professionals deal with when working with patients in a palliative stage of their cancer.
How can we set the right goal for the patient? Not only the patients can be traumatized, so can we as professionals.
Bone mets:
An international working group was formed in 2017 to develop a consensus statement on exercise prescription for people with bone metastasis.
On this conference you will get an overview of the current evidence regarding exercise prescription and how to apply evidence into the clinical setting.
Goal:
With this conference, we aim to bring together physical therapists working in oncology from around the globe, to exchange best practices and update knowledge based on recent scientific developments.
