OVERVIEW

Emergency Psychiatry Course 2025 is organized by Evidence Based Sweden AB, Physicians' Institute for Professional Development in Healthcare / Lakarnas institut for professionell utveckling i sjukvarden (LIPUS) and will be held from Dec 03 - 05, 2025 at Elite Hotel Marina Plaza, Helsingborg, Helsingborg, Scania, Sweden.

Description:
The doctor should receive a solid foundation of facts about the treatment of acute psychiatric conditions, legislation and risk assessment. The course should provide insights into approaches, the dilemmas of the on-call doctor and the boundaries between acute and non-acute, between psychiatry, addiction and interventions from other sources, as well as meeting the need for acute interventions also for the patient's environment, such as children and other relatives.

Another important aspect is treatment, communication with the patient and relatives in healthcare, which includes how conversations are conducted, how we receive a patient, about body language, how we greet, look the patient in the eye and sit or stand in relation to the patient and relatives.

Overall Goals:
The course is a basic course within specialist services for psychiatry and its overall purpose is to provide a solid foundation in the treatment, legislation and assessment of acute psychiatric conditions.

Results for the Participant:
After the course, the doctor should be able to:

  • determine what is urgent and what can wait for planned specialist care, as well as manage local guidelines for disasters and PKL work
  • identify acute needs and communicate or refer to emergency interventions within social services, primary care, somatic specialty, police, etc.
  • carry out, evaluate and report structured acute risk assessments for suicide and violence.
  • explain how to apply the psychiatry (LPT, LRV) and social services compulsory care laws (LVM, LVU).
  • explain how to apply the reporting obligation according to SOL (children or young people with suspected need for protection), the Weapons Act, the Driving License Act or the Criminal Code in the event of incitement to a serious crime.
  • identify and differentially diagnose non-acute psychiatric conditions (such as neuroleptic malignant syndrome, serotonin syndrome, potentially life-threatening conditions resulting from abuse and withdrawal).
