4th Annual Critical Care for the Hospitalist Pre-Course

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1.Discuss selected quality improvement, geriatric and palliative care concepts of the hospitalized patient in the setting of developing hospitalist practices in their area.

2.Explain the challenges for hospital-based healthcare providers in the Midwest.

3.Formulate higher quality evidence-based approaches to managing patients in the peri-operative period.

4.Identify nosocomial infections and how to prevent, diagnose and treat them.

5.Describe oncologic emergencies among hospitalized patients and identify best treatment.

6.Analyze inpatient guidelines for treatment of conditions such as COPD and Pneumonia.

Seventy-five percent of hospitalists now care for patients in the Intensive Care Unit, indicating an increased need for competency-based education targeted at the management of critical care. This course intends to focus on various topics that pertain to critical care medicine and provide hospitalists with essential information to manage this patient population. Our course will incorporate a mechanical ventilator workshop, which includes a real time demonstration of modes and waveforms using an artificial lung and simulated patient. In addition,our speakers will provide updates on some of the most pertinent areas of critical illness frequently faced by hospitalists.
