Dr. William Giannobile is the Najjar Endowed Professor Dentistry and Biomedical Engineering and Chair of the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He received his DDS and an MS in Oral Biology from the University of Missouri. He later received his Certificate in Periodontology and Doctor of Medical Sciences in Oral Biology from Harvard University. He subsequently completed postdoctoral training in Molecular Biology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Giannobile served as a faculty member at Harvard and the Forsyth Institute in Boston. Dr. Giannobile has been a faculty member at Michigan since 1998 and served as the Inaugural Director of the Michigan Center for Oral Health Research from 2003-2012. He has previously served as a Visiting Professor at the Biotechnology Institute of Regenerative Medicine at the University of Genoa Medical School in Genoa, Italy in 2006. Most recently he completed a sabbatical as a Visiting Professor at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London in 2013.

Dr. Giannobile has published and lectured extensively in the areas of Periodontal Regenerative Medicine and Personalized Medicine. Dr. Giannobile is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dental Research, the Official Journal of the International and American Associations of Dental Research. He is also a consultant to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for Dental Devices. He is the Immediate Past President of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation.

Dr. Giannobile is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists. In addition to his faculty appointment at Michigan, he maintains a private practice limited to periodontics and implantology in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
