Repair of alveolar bone and soft tissue defects caused by chronic periodontal disease is a major goal of oral and craniofacial reconstructive therapy. The field of periodontal tissue engineering combines advances in materials science and biology to repair tooth-supporting structures and for whole tooth engineering. This presentation will discuss some of the challenges faced in the restoration of tooth/dental implant-bone interfaces for regeneration including microbial, host response and tissue engineering concepts.
The use of gene transfer via direct delivery to osseous defect sites or transduction of cells via ex vivo approaches will be show to delivery regenerative growth factors to stimulate tissue neogenesis or quell the exuberant host response inflammatory diseases. Recent data on the use of computational-designed image-based scaffolds, cell therapy or biologics to target tissue stimulators to periodontal defects will be highlighted for use in periodontal tissue engineering. The presentation will be put in the context of technologies that are under investigation in human clinical trials or have been recently approved for clinical use in humans for oral and periodontal bioengineering.
