Dr Makin trained initially as a clinical oncologist at The Christie. Her growing interest in the challenges of progressing and advanced malignancy led her to the relatively new specialty of palliative medicine. She held a consultant appointment in Newcastle upon Tyne, based at St Oswald's Hospice, before returning to Manchester in 1995. She led the development of the multidisciplinary palliative care service at The Christie and helped to establish higher specialist training in palliative medicine in Greater Manchester.
She led a cross-College working party into the urgent care needs of people with cancer in 2012-13 and currently chairs the palliative medicine specialty committee at the Royal College of Physicians.
For several years she has been engaged in the development of support and information for cancer survivors and took up the new pathway director role in Manchester Cancer in 2014. She is currently working with the Macmillan cancer Improvement Project to improve services across the city of Manchester. Publications in The Christie research publications repository
